Student independence in terms of finances
Before requesting residency, a student under the age of 25 must demonstrate their financial independence. This involves paying federal income taxes, not relying heavily on other people for financial support, and not living at home during your final year of high school. The student must also fulfill all other residency criteria. For instance, individuals must have the money to pay for both their education and living expenses.
Documents and information can be provided as proof of financial independence. Tax returns, W-2s, and lease agreements for apartments are a few examples of these papers. The provision of copies of all pertinent financial records is also acceptable as proof of financial independence. We need your most recent tax returns. The supporting materials should show how the student makes money and what it costs.
Students who receive significant financial aid may be considered financially independent if they can show a connection to the person who is providing for them. Students who have been married for a full calendar year prior to the quarter of application must also show documentation of the union as well as independent financial statements. Students should not petition for residency as dependent students if they are financially dependent on their parents.
It could be challenging to achieve financial independence while in college. But a student needs to finish Sections D, E, and F. Additionally, a student’s parents must sign Section G. This is because omitting the parent’s income could cause the award to be delayed.
